Multicultural Kingborough

Diversity & Inclusion Statement

Kingborough Council strives to be the model of an inclusive culture where diversity of thought and background is valued. We acknowledge, value and respect people of all cultures, sexualities, beliefs, abilities, genders and ages, and support their rights to equal access, equity and participation. We believe diversity of thought and background, together with an inclusive work environment are critical to support every person and team to excel. We want to enable innovation for continuous improvement of service delivery. We strive for an environment where people feel they belong, are valued as an individual, and are respected with a shared sense of fairness. (Prepared by Kingborough Council’s Disability Inclusion and Access Advisory Committee and endorsed by Council in 2023)

We Stand Together Against Racism

The ‘We Stand Together Against Racism’ campaign has been developed collaboratively between Brighton, Clarence, Hobart, Glenorchy, Kingborough and Sorell councils to coincide with International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Cultural diversity enriches our community and makes us stronger.

There is real power in standing together against racism and celebrating the many cultures that shape our community.

We are proud to welcome people from all backgrounds and are committed to rejecting racism in all its forms. Hearing local voices share how they stand up against racism is powerful, and providing support and resources for bystanders empowers more people to take action.

Multicultural Consultation and Action Plan

The Multicultural Action Plan was endorsed by Council on 5 August 2024 after a period of community consultation.

The plan can be viewed here: Multicultural Action Plan

The action plan covers four main themes:

    • Celebration

    • Communication

    • Inclusion and education

    • Improving outcomes

History of Consultation

Kingborough Council is committed to creating a community that is inclusive, safe, welcoming and respectful for all.

Kingborough has one of the highest multicultural populations, with over 21% of residents born overseas here, compared the rest of Tasmania which has 15% born overseas.

To better understand and address the needs of our multicultural communities, Council formed a Multicultural Advisory Group with members of the community and Councillors. The Advisory Group helped Council engage with the Kingborough’s multicultural communities through this survey.

A community survey was open from 14 September to the 23 October 2023. The results from the survey informed the development of a Draft Multicultural Action Plan for Kingborough.

The results of the consultation can be found here: Multicultural Public Consultation Report

Council developed a Multicultural Action Plan based on the results this community consultation.  This plan was endorsed by Council on 17 June 2024 and was released for feedback until 9 July 2024.

This engagement is now closed and the Multicultural Action Plan has been endorsed (see above).
