Kingston Bus Stop

Project Overview

Kingborough Council, working with the Department of State Growth and Metro, is implementing design changes to the north bound Kingston bus stop. These upgrades will create a more efficient and user-friendly bus stop.

Once the modifications are complete, all bus services (both north and south bound) currently operating on Goshawk Way will relocate back to the Channel Highway, providing easier access to shops, health services, and key amenities in Kingston.

Project start

  • Week commencing March 24, 2025

Adjustments:

Following the completion of the north bound Kingston bus stop, feedback from bus operators identified areas for minor design improvements to enhance commuter safety and operational efficiency. These include:

  • Widening sections of the footpath to improve pedestrian safety.
  • Adjusting the kerb to improve bus manoeuvrability.
  • Widening the entry point to prevent congestion.
  • Adding line markings to guide buses within the site.

How will we know when the buses move?

Once construction is complete, Kingborough Council will collaborate with State Growth and Metro to ensure a smooth transition of both bus stops back to the Channel Highway from Goshawk Way.

To keep the community informed, updates will be provided through:

  • Local newspapers
  • Council’s website and Facebook page
  • Signage at both bus stop locations

Additionally, Council staff will be on-site during the initial transition period to assist commuters and ensure everyone is aware of the changes.

Community Considerations

In response to community feedback, there have been discussions about keeping the bus stops on Goshawk Way instead of moving them back to the Channel Highway. However, this location creates accessibility challenges for elderly residents and people with disabilities, making it more difficult to reach public transport for shopping and essential services. The redesign addresses these concerns by prioritising safe, convenient access to public transport.

 Addressing Design Concerns

Some feedback has raised concerns about the curved design of the north bound Kingston bus stop rather than a straight layout.

Due to land constraints along the main road, the available space determined the shape of the stop. Extensive turn path trials, including tests with articulated buses, were conducted to ensure functionality. Post-construction assessments confirmed that minor modifications were needed to further enhance accessibility and usability.

Project Costs & Funding

The total cost of the modifications is $70,000.

Next Steps

Council will continue working closely with State Growth and Metro to:

  • Complete the modifications as planned.
  • Conduct post-construction testing to confirm functionality.
  • Clearly communicate the transition of both bus stops back to the Channel Highway from Goshawk Way.

These upgrades ensure that Kingston’s public transport infrastructure remains safe, efficient, and accessible for all community members.

Review

A review of the project has been commissioned, with a summary of recommendations to be published in due course.

Update – 28 November 2024

Council has sent the updated drawings (which include the requested changes) to the department of State Growth and we are awaiting reply to these this week. Council’s focus is on getting these alterations agreed to by the many partners involved and making the necessary changes. Once all stakeholders agree to the changes, Council will proceed with the necessary steps to return the buses to the Channel Highway stops.  Any changes must meet the expectations of all stakeholders, and Council is working closely with the department to achieve this. Council is hopeful that this work can start in late January, depending on contractor availability.
