StoryWalk installed at Kingston Wetlands

The new Kingston StoryWalk installation starts at Kingston Park.

A new StoryWalk was recently installed in Kingston featuring Tazzie the Turbo Chook.

Kingborough Mayor, Paula Wriedt said the StoryWalk started at the lower BBQ area in Kingston Park and travelled to the Kingston Wetlands.

“This ongoing partnership between Council and Kingston Library encourages reading in any location,” Cr Wriedt said.

“StoryWalks are literacy projects that display children’s books along a community walking route.

“This is a great way for young people to enjoy the outdoors and it creates a lovely reading experience with their families and carers.

“This is the third StoryWalk installed in Kingborough, with locations already in Dru Point, Margate and along the Snug foreshore.

“Our StoryWalks feature stories from Tasmanian authors and illustrators.

“The new Kingston installation tells the story of Tazzie the Turbo Chook by author and illustrator Sonia Strong, with 10 locations starting at Kingston Park, traveling under the Channel Highway underpass and finishing in the Kingston Wetlands.

“Tazzie the Turbo Chook originally launched in Margate in 2020 and was rehomed to the Kingston Wetlands.

“Margate’s StoryWalk now showcases the “We Love Country” book from authors Leanne Pelikan, Nicole Smith and Kylie Dickson, with illustrations by Jamin and Luke Emmerton.

“Snug’s StoryWalk features the “Travelling Tasmanian Tigers” book from author and illustrator Margie Kirk.

“This fantastic community collaboration involved support from the Tasmanian Community Fund, Friends of the Library Kingston, Libraries Tasmania and Kingborough Council, along with the Channel Men’s Shed who made the stands,” Cr Wriedt said.

Construction of the new Kingston Wetlands StoryWalk coincided with World Wetlands Day on Friday, 2 February.

An official launch will be held during Tasmania Reads Week on Friday, 28 March.
