This year, Kingborough Council will be delivering the “Kingborough Together” project which is a one-year initiative supported by a Tasmanian Government Social Cohesion grant.
Kingborough Mayor, Paula Wriedt said that Kingborough Council is committed to creating a positive and inclusive community where everyone feels value and respected.
“The “Kingborough Together” initiative aims to promote inclusivity and showcase the rich cultural heritage that makes Kingborough such a unique and welcoming place.
“There will be monthly multicultural workshops or cooking classes for the community to enjoy, including Greek cookery and a Ukranian folk art class.
“Council’s Community Services team will also be delivering four family friendly, inclusive events throughout the year.
“The first event will be on Harmony Day on 21 March at the Kingborough Community Hub.
“The night will be filled with live music, dance performances and a large range of activities, all celebrating our multicultural community.
“Later in the year we will be offering free “Upstander” training for community members.
“This training focuses on the impacts of prejudice and discrimination and how those taking part can assist if they witness racist behaviour or incidents.
“These initiatives are also aligned with Kingborough Council’s Multicultural Action Plan.
“Developed with input from Kingborough’s local multicultural community, the Multicultural Action Plan was launched in August 2024 to address racism and promote inclusion.
“Residents are encouraged to embrace new residents and create a welcoming community.
“I’ve always said that I want to lead a caring community here in Kingborough, and this is one way that we can see this happen,” Cr Wriedt said.
