Free Green Waste Weekend

Kingborough Council is offering a Free Green Waste Weekend for both Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre and Bruny Island Waste and Recycling Centre on Saturday, 22 February and Sunday, 23 February.

Mayor, Paula Wriedt said the Free Green Waste Weekend allows residents to clean their gardens and tidy their properties from organic waste.

“The popular Free Green Waste Weekend ensures the community has an accessible option to removing green waste from their gardens,” said Cr Wriedt.

“We know that we are a bush fire prone municipality, and the recent fires in the Margate and Snug areas are a reminder of that.

“They are also a reminder that all residents, but particularly those in more vulnerable areas, should take the chance of the Free Green Waste Weekend to clear areas on their own properties.

“As Tasmania Fire Service highlighted at last week’s public meeting about the fires, it is never too late to reduce your risk by removing overgrown vegetation, clearing gutters and removing highly flammable bushes that might be located close to your house.

“Green waste must be completely free of contaminants including general waste, hazardous waste, plastic and declared weeds.”

The green waste area is only for green waste and general waste must not be dropped off in this area.

A limit of five cubic metres per household applies and green waste must not be larger than 300mm in diameter.

Commercial operators will be requested to pay standard rates.

The Free Green Waste Weekend runs from Saturday, 22 February and Sunday, 23 February at the Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre 9am to 4pm and Bruny Island Waste and Recycling Centre 8am to 3.30pm.
