Hunting for Nectar

Congratulations to the 2024 Kingborough Acquisition Award winner, Simon Ward and his winning sculpture, Hunting for Nectar.

The Acting Mayor, Clare Glade-Wright said Simon’s beautiful sculpture of a yellow wattlebird feeding on one of Tasmania’s most spectacular flowers the Tasmanian Waratah, was a stunning acquisition for the Kingborough community.

“The steel sculpture highlights a beautiful combination between two of Tasmania’s most striking flora and fauna the Tasmanian Waratah and Yellow Wattlebird,” Cr Glade-Wright said.

“It is a beautiful sculpture and was selected for its size and intricacy which will lend perfectly when it is situated in one of Kingborough’s reserves next year.

“Every year, the Art Farm Birchs Bay hosts an Annual Sculpture Prize, which is updated with new works from a variety of sculptors.

“The event showcases contemporary outdoor sculptures along a 1.5 km scenic trail that winds through bushland, gardens, and farmland, offering a unique blend of art and nature.

“This event not only celebrates the talent of emerging and established artists but also promotes interaction between art, community, and the environment.

“The sculptures often engage with the natural surroundings, like Simon’s piece highlighting the intersection of art and nature.

“Over the years Council has acquired several pieces of artwork that have been located throughout the municipality in reserves, parks and other locations.”
