Summerleas Road Underpass

Kingborough Mayor, Paula Wriedt said she understood the ongoing road closure for the Summerleas underpass project had caused significant inconvenience to the community.

“We sincerely apologise for the delays and the disruption this has caused,” Cr Wriedt said.

“Once Summerleas road was closed unforeseen delays occurred, including inclement weather and the movement of external infrastructure extending the project timeline significantly.

“Ongoing negotiations with all project partners have occurred throughout these delays to try and minimise the impact on the community.

“This included the option of temporarily reopening the road, however safety concerns (with the road partially excavated) meant that this was not a feasible option.

“Now we’re currently looking at an additional 12 weeks of road closure.

“Our contractors are investigating ways to shorten this time frame, and we will continue to communicate openly with the community on the progress.

“This project has not met the standards that I, or our community, expect.

“The Council CEO will be seeking to undertake a thorough review of this project to ensure that Council fully understands the decisions that led the project to this point, and the learnings to ensure that our project delivery improves in the future.”
