In Recognition of Dying to Know Day, Kingborough Council will be hosting three talks on Wednesday 7 August around death and dying and bringing these conversations into light.
Mayor, Paula Wriedt said the theme this year for Dying to Know Day 2024 was ‘Personalising final arrangements and building community’.
“We have 3 fantastic speakers at the Kingborough Community Hub, providing informative talks on topics we traditionally many of us prefer to keep private,” Cr Wriedt said.
“Bec Lyons from Solace will talk about what to do when someone dies and how to create a funeral plan.
“Kate Glover from Palliative Care Tasmania will talk about building a compassionate community and Steph Meikle from Palhelp Volunteers will host a talk about capturing life stories before it is too late.
“Council will also support a monthly death café in Kingston and a new death café in Woodbridge during August and September.
“Our Kingston Death Cafés have been very popular and have provided a safe enjoyable space for everyone to drink tea, eat cake and chat openly about death and dying.
“Council hopes to extend these important conversations into the Channel region and is looking forward to partnering with West Winds Community Centre.
“For those who feel overwhelmed by the thought of getting their paperwork completed, Council is also offering a ‘Make a start on your Advance Care Directive’ in September so that participants can work in a small group with an experienced facilitator to get this important document prepared.
