Summerleas Road Underpass

Council is constructing an underpass on Summerleas Road to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in Kingston.

Kingborough Mayor, Paula Wriedt said the installation of the underpass would require the temporary closure of Summerleas Road between Whitewater Crescent and Queens Parade.

“Work will start on site on Friday 7 June 2024 and motorists may experience some travel disruptions for the first two weeks,” Cr Wriedt said.

“To install the new infrastructure, it will be necessary to close Summerleas Road from Monday 24 June for up to 10 weeks, weather dependent.

“The detour will be via Whitewater Crescent and Willowbend Road. (Please see map)

“To ease pressure on the residential roads we are encouraging everyone to use Huon Highway to get in and around Kingston including to the High School and all the sporting and recreational facilities in the area.

“Council has chosen to install the underpass due to the road constraints such as a blind corner, the narrow width and lack of physical space, alternate crossing options are limited.

“The detour may add an additional travel time for cars along Summerleas Road with buses traveling through the area to be rerouted.

“The Metro bus stop just past the roundabout out the front of 53 Summerleas Road will be temporarily moved to Whitewater Crescent between numbers 3 and 5.

“The informal Tassielink bus stop outside 100 Summerleas Road will be inaccessible and relocated to 130 Summerleas Road.”

Funding for the project is through a $750,000 Greater Hobart City Deal grant, combined with $1 million from Council Capital funds.
